Out of the Fog/Into the Green

Big Bear in August offers peaceful afternoons, tranquil evenings. The summer crowd are weaning off for the summer, and it is more “just you and the forest.”

After a long and hot summer in the city, you can’t beat getting up to the mountains for some fresh air. All of the main summer attractions are still open just without the crowds.

Find the best alpine trails as you climb to the summit and overlook the San Bernardino National Forest. Big Bear Lake is still warm, and you can cool off with a refreshing float at one of the sandy beaches near the dam. Whichever experiences you are looking for, Big Bear always serves up a great adventure!

Big Bear Lake is open for boating and recreational activities on the water.

As far as Big Bear weather in August, the average high temperature is 74 degrees Fahrenheit while the average low temperate is 42 degrees Fahrenheit.  The water temperature in the Lake is starting to cool off and sits around 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

USE YOUR PALMS AND CLIMB

I’ll list a few, but I cannot compete with the official complete guide and ranking of the most accessible and climbed routes in the park.

  1. Holcomb Valley – A site for the most gold mines in southern California. You can camp, hike or off-road here. This is a great beginner level spot to get started climbing.
  2. Castle Rock – A well-traveled climb with a 500ft elevation. It has views of the lake and wildlife and has been rated as a moderately advanced hike.
  3. North Shore Boulder Field – has been called a fun, challenging and interesting climb. These boulders range from 25-35 feet tall and there are more than 30 ways to climb up them.

Outdoor Yoga @ Castle Rock

In August 2025, you can hike up to a peaceful spot overlooking Big Bear Lake, perfect for practicing yoga surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. For a more guided experience, visit the Big Bear Mountain Yoga Center and join a class with Colin Schour. Known for his encouraging and supportive teaching style, Colin helps students of all levels find comfort, balance, and inner strength.

The studio offers a variety of classes including gentle flow, meditation, and strength-building sessions, making it easy to fit yoga into your summer mountain getaway. Whether you prefer practicing outdoors with fresh mountain air or in a cozy studio setting, Big Bear’s yoga options will leave you feeling refreshed and grounded.

Snow Summit Mountain Biking

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced mountain biker, Big Bear in August 2025 offers an extensive network of trails perfect for all skill levels. From easy, scenic rides through pine forests to challenging downhill and technical routes, there’s something for everyone. Popular trails include the Skyline Trail, known for its stunning lake views, the Snow Summit Bike Park with lifts and dedicated downhill runs, and the Castle Rock Trail, which offers a mix of flowy singletrack and rocky sections.

The cooler mountain air in August makes for comfortable riding, but it’s always smart to bring plenty of water and sun protection. Local bike shops and rental centers are available if you need gear or advice on the best trails.

Paddleboarding Big Bear Lake

In August 2025, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on Big Bear Lake is a fantastic way to enjoy the stunning mountain scenery while getting some gentle exercise. Glide smoothly across the calm, clear waters and explore hidden coves and quiet spots that larger boats can’t reach.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler, Big Bear offers plenty of rental shops with boards and safety gear, plus guided tours to help you discover secret bays and wildlife along the shoreline.

Big Bear Farmers Market

Every Tuesday 8:30 AM – 1 PM (April through September)

Come out to Big Bear’s Farmers Market at the Convention Center to support your local growers and pick up local fruit and vegetables. Hand-made craft vendors, as well as local food, are also available!

Tour de Big Bear

(August 1–3)

The Tour de Big Bear is a popular cycling event that welcomes riders of all levels. Choose from multiple route options—25, 50, 70, or 100 miles—on both road and gravel paths through the beautiful mountain scenery. There’s even a family-friendly ride, making it a great weekend for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts to challenge themselves and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

LakeFest

(August 22–24)

LakeFest is a lively summer festival centered around water sports and community fun. Join paddleboard and kayak races, or take part in the one-mile swim across Big Bear Lake. When you’re not racing, enjoy live music performances, tasty food from local vendors, and a festive atmosphere perfect for families and friends looking to celebrate the season.

Big Bear MX Grand Prix

The Big Bear MX Grand Prix is an exciting motocross event held at Bear Mountain Ski Resort. Featuring races for all skill levels—from amateurs to pros—the event takes advantage of the resort’s unique terrain to deliver thrilling competition and impressive jumps. It’s a must-see for motorsports fans and anyone looking for high-energy action in the mountains.
