First place we stayed in San Fran as we needed a place to rest for the night to be able to walk to the bus station to catch our greyhound bus early hours the next morning. Honestly such friendly service and we stayed in the small double room which was a bunk bed that even had a desk and tv in there. Shared bathroom facilities were clean and well maintained. Would highly recommend. I must note that the flight of stairs at the entrance to get to reception and rooms are steep and we had large 23kg suitcases and our carryons let me tell you the work out we got going up damn, there’s no elevator guys just yourself and your muscles lol the receptionist offered to help bless his heart but I knew what I packed felt like bricks so I did it myself. Just keep in mind if you large heavy bags like we did .

Stayed here for a week, a good travellers hostel. They organise social events every other evening which are fun.
Location: It is at the boundary of Financial District and Chinatown so safe area and very walkable from Ferry Building. I had no issue coming back after sunset. Walkable distance from bus stops as well.
Tip: Be prepared for the stairs, there is no lift. However, manager there was kind to help me haul luggage up the stairs.

Lovely time here. I spent here one night and I was greeted with a friendly host. It was friday so we had a free barbecue night which was great for socialising. The rooms and shower were clean. The next day iI had a rraly good itinerary recommended to me. I would come again.

ITH is handsdown your BEST option to stay in SF, The pricing is amazing for the quality of your stay and the kindness of the owner, also you get to stay almost on dowtown SF! Which is crazy if you ask me, you can walk 6 minutes any direction and I’ll get you to Metros station for you to get to know the city, If you stay In ITH you don’t need Car or uber. the place was really clean and beds comfortable, I stayed in 3 other hostels on my trip and this, the last was the best

I had a very good experience with the hostel. It’s situated in the center of the city. A good walk to Pier 39 which was amazing spot to watch wild sea lions. And it’s very near to China town where you can get cheap food. The property is also very clean. They serve daily breakfast which is nice and good. And they have a very clean bathroom.

Incredible environment for a back packer. Home away from home. A warm community, good spirits, fun times such as karaoke experience, pizzas on the house and great in-house conversations for those that prefer quality time moments and meeting new people.
Free breakfast and the hosts are very nice and helpful.
And oh yes, the prices are reasonable.
I enjoyed ITH … will definitely have it as my to go place whenever I am in San Francisco.

Booked this hostel for one night and ended up staying longer I liked it so much. I love the decor, the environs and people here.
It has such a nice crowd of travellers and Assad is an absolute legend of a man. He was so helpful and kind, helping me with my bags up the 3/4 flights of stairs, helping me with padlocks and we had such good chats about parts of the world we mutually love.
The hostel is in an excellent location only a 5/10 minute walk from Montgomery Station and is so close to the tram stops. Chinatown is safe and a place I wandered around solo late at night with no fears. Lots of bars and food nearby.
The bed and pillows were so comfortable and I appreciated the privacy curtain. I just wish there were private lights for us in the beds.
The bathrooms were lovely and clean, the showers take a minute to warm up but once they are going the water is lovely and hot, good pressure and plentiful.
I would stay here again in a heartbeat! I would highly recommend! 🩷

I am really thankful to Asad. I forgot my charger, and I could easily come back and get it without any problem. He was very kind. He even invited me to breakfast, and when I said I had already eaten, he offered me coffee and chocolate. Very warm and friendly host.

Location was perfect, right in the middle of chinatown, service was more than excellent, the manager was scarily-quiet!
i enjoyed the daily activities they held, expereinced BBQ night at the rooftop while its cold and some food/taco night! made some nice friends which ended with us heading out to drink! toilet always empty for some reason even when the rooms were full, lockers were huge but it felt a little cramped!

The best part was the location, and the recommendations I received during check-in were spot on.

The management was very caring and attentive. It really was like stepping into their home which they care for. All guests were respectful of space, washing dishes, and not being disruptive or unruly. They had a bbq on the rooftop the first night I was there, then trivia the second night. I didn’t expect to interact like that, but it was a pleasurable experience and I met some very nice ppl, allowing for connection. Of course, you are welcome to retire to your room and not engage if that is your wish. Asad, the manager on duty, was super chill, made sure things were tidy and running smoothly. He must have been doing this for awhile because it was a super smooth stay.

I definitely give a perfect mark to all categories. First, the host Asad was kind and helpful. I arrived at about 10:30 pm and he was sitting at the reception desk to wait for me to help me check in easily. I did not know that I had to inform him I would bring a bike with me but it was late and he let me in with the bike and even gave me a hand to bring the bike up to the 3rd floor. He treats everyone with respect. He is friendly and we chatted about multiple topics, from healthy communications to stock investments etc.,
Second, the kitchen is clean and always ready if a hungry guest checked in or came back late to have something to eat. Third, bathrooms are clean. Soaps and shampoos provided. I did not expect that because other hostels I stayed never provided these basic but make our days very much easier. Fourth, good location to wander around the city core on foot. Last but not least, he connected guests together so we had a chance to know new friends around the world.
I cannot expect more.

I was there for three nights and have a very pleasant stay. I love the proximity to Chinatown and the downtown area. I was there mainly to do some riding so I brought along my bike. The manager was kind enough to accommodate my needs and make me feel welcome, it was much appreciated.

This was my first time in San Francisco, so I was very worried, but the hostel owner was incredibly kind and I was so grateful.
I'm older and have a sore back, so it was especially difficult for me. They even helped me carry my bags, helped me check in early, and were so considerate during checkout. I was incredibly grateful.
I was able to cook with salmon and meat purchased from a nearby market, and the breakfast was plentiful with eggs, bread, bananas, and coffee.
I also got to experience the owner's culinary skills with daily specials and tacos.
My roommates were also polite, quiet, and friendly, which made it even better.
The area didn't feel unsafe, so I felt comfortable coming in at night.

I was a solo female traveler, and the flight was delayed, so I arrived at Idongne at a crazy 11 PM. ㅠ I walked around with my suitcase for about 17 minutes. Idongne is a safe place, so there weren't many people, and it was fine!!
I stayed for two nights, and I just walked around between midnight and 1 AM to go to jazz bars and pubs. It was safe, and Chinatown was right nearby, so it was beautiful at night.
The beds were comfortable, and each bunk had a curtain, so there was plenty of privacy. I was assigned a bunk bed on the second floor, and the ceiling was incredibly high, so even though it was a bunk bed, it didn't feel cramped at all. It was nice. There was some noise outside, so wear earplugs. Oh, and they have earplugs at the reception.
This hostel has a party every day of the week, like "~night"? Anyway, the gatherings are really active, and I participated in Taco Night, and they even made me a free taco!
I booked breakfast included, and it came with bread, a toaster, jam, eggs, and bananas, so I had a filling breakfast.
There's a water purifier, microwave, and shared kitchen, and you can use the shared kitchen.
The guests were all so friendly that we went out and played together the next day.
Oh, and the way the door opens here is unique.
When you click on the URL and the website opens, the door opens for exactly two seconds. There are two doors, so
you have to open one and then immediately open the inner door. Otherwise, it'll be locked,
and you'll have to reactivate the website.
There's no elevator, but the man at the counter helped me with my luggage. He was so kind and helpful!

Oh, and I asked to store my luggage on the day of checkout, but they were happy to just leave it there for free, no extra charge. Haha. It was great.

As other reviews say, it is not the best looking or best condition hostel, but it is a good place to stay if you want to mingle with fellow travelers.

I had an amazing experience staying at this hostel. It’s a perfect place to meet people, make friends, and feel at home. The environment is warm and welcoming, and the host and staff are very kind and helpful.

I cannot praise the hostel enough. Solo female traveller (26 yo) for a conference. Very cosy vibes. Extremely affordable. Free breakfast (daily) and dinner on most days. Basic free food (like bread, jam, peanut butter, ramen, coffee, tea etc) throughout the day. The best part was the people there. The staff was extremely accomodating, friendly, respectful of your private space, and very humble. Very considerate, helped me multiple times without asking (be it arranging veg food, offering private space so that I could work, reducing the rent because I was on a budget. There are countless instances). They allowed early check in (four hours before the actual check in time). Spacious dorm beds. Spacious storage space under the beds. So many sockets near the bed for charging multiple appliances. Reading light for each bed. Clean bed sheets, pillow, blanket, curtains. Clean washrooms. One of the safest areas in downtown. Quiet rooms. So many positives. Highly recommended. Only downside would be that the rooms are on 3rd floor and reception on 4th. There are no elevators, so could be difficult for some people to climb up the stairs.

My stay didn't have a great start (I couldn't get in and no one was answering the door), plus the level of cleanliness wasn't to my liking, to be honest (there was someone's booger on the wall of my bunk etc.), BUT! The manager is absolutely great, he's very helpful and really goes above and beyond to make the stay as pleasant as possible. The social life in the hostel is very lively, there's an event every evening (barbecue, karaoke etc.), plus the breakfast is better than in other hostels in California. And the tea they offer 24/7 is one of the best teas I've ever tasted! Also, I quite liked the location. If I ever come back to SF, I'd stay here again.

Amazing! Nothing compares to the community at this hostel. The people are so friendly and open. Also everyday there is activities, perfect for solo travellers. Activities include karaoke, bbq night, taco night and more. Also, sometimes and depending on if there is a guest with a specific talent, they host an event to feature them. Amazing, very kind people, I recommend with no hesitation. Also there is a groupchat were they share all fun events happening in SF.

We stayed in a Micro-Private Double room. The only windows in the building seem to be in certain dorms, which meant that after passing by the metal gate at the entrance, we would not see daylight until coming out the day after. This lack of windows unfortunately made us feel claustrophobic. The common areas are cramped which may help guests get together during social events but, in other times, it feels ackward. Inside the room, we felt that the bottom bed could use some deep cleaning, as there was residue from other guests on the metal frame under the mattress.

Great hostel in the heart of Chinatown, you'll be well-located for transport. The place is warm, decorated with a boat cabin theme. You'll meet new people quite easily! In addition, every evening activities are organized, even offering meals (burgers, tacos, pizza) 😋 The only downside is that there is no elevator and the terrace is only open one evening a week.

Asad and the other managers are true to the hostel's values of being friendly and very helpful.
They make an effort to bring people together (if that's what you want).
My dorm was very clean, quiet, and the shower was hot and powerful!
Great value for money.

I recently stayed in a 6 bed room at this hostel, and had a great time. The clientele is mixed, but all very friendly and social, as a single traveller in my early 50s, I did not feel isolated or not included.
The bed and facilities was adequate and what was expected for a great value hostel. Location is great, I was able to walk safely to the piers and most tourist spots no hassles.
What sets this hostel out from the rest is the service, social activities and free food. Yes, they provide free breakfast, Taco and BBQ nights, all free of charge, amazing!!
And Assad, what a joy and an asset to the hostel. Nothing was too difficult, and he was always accommodating. He helped out with an extra nights accommodation after my misunderstanding, and everything is done with a smile.

Definitely one of the best hostel I’ve ever been to. It doesn’t have the best rooms or the best communs area but it has such a good vibe ! Have you ever seen a hostel make a birthday cake to a guest ?
I’ve met lots of great people there and the staff are so nice. Everyone talk with each other. There are event every night. Don’t miss the barbecue on the rooftop !

after writing a review for google and booking (because I was prompted), the ITH texted me constantly on my personal phone and called me from multiple numbers essentially saying why I wrote two of the same reviews and requesting to delete one. It was very uncomfortable and unprofessional that they would do this via my personal phone. ITH as a hostel should just reply to the reviews accordingly. For that reason alone, I felt the need to state my review after deleting it.

Wish there was more than one bathroom per floor but overall, it was fine. The price was right. But the rooms left a lot to desired. Stuffy, clothes and bags strewn on the floor at night. there was a personal alarm going off from a roommate at 430 and him sleeping through it. The bed itself clean and comfortable, but pillows had a smell. Overall, it wasn't a bad stay at the hostel.

You may need to pay attention to the weight of your luggage. Their counter is on the fourth floor. You have to carry it up by yourself. Everything else is fine. They also let me store my luggage until the evening.

I've been hopping between different hostels in San Francisco and this is definitely the best one for location and staff support. About the location, it's in one of the safest area in SF, between Financial District and Chinatown. Choose this place and stay away from mission/tenderloin area, trust me it doesn't matter if you find anything cheaper, unless you want to live in first person The Walking Dead. In ITH everything I needed was 10 minutes far or less by walk and the staff very present to suggest nice activities, organise trivia nights and even offer dinners or sweets on very specific days. You won't find in any other hostel staff that at 2 am is up with you to support you dealing with your next destination. Most of the hostels are managed by temporary volunteers or are fully automatic; here you can see that there's a manager caring about your experience. The community dimension that you'll find there must not be given for granted; I met new friends and I'm still in touch with them. I never write reviews, but if you're lost as I was when booking from afar, I hope this one could help.

Great social hostel with a good location near to groceries, gym, and touristy spots. Asad has brilliant local knowledge. He also put loads of effort into events every evening from chill quizzes to rooftop BBQs and more. I’ve stayed in many hostels and this one stands out. A friendly and safe spot for solo travellers looking to make friends but never too loud and obnoxious for people to sleep. Hope I’ll get the chance to go back soon!

I spent two nights at this hostel and it was absolutely perfect!🙏 i felt really safe and that is so important.
Taco Tuesday was so fun and it felt like a little family ☺️ i really wish to come back someday.

It was nice and clean. Everyone was very friendly. Also felt safe, there is a virtual lock on the doors to enter the building. They also have locks to rent or buy if you forget to bring your own padlock for the cubbies underneath the bunk beds.

I stayed here for some time back in Sep '24, and honestly, it was such a memorable experience. Met some amazing people, Richard Gale from the UK especially stands out, what a guy! Asad, the host, was super chill and great to talk to, we had some awesome chats about movies and life, and he was also super helpful whenever I had questions or needed guidance.
This place made me feel so at home that I ended up singing my heart out on karaoke nights, something I’d never normally do. And those rooftop hangouts? Pure bliss.
Not sure when I’ll be back in SF, but whenever I am, this is 100% the place I’ll stay. Can’t wait to relive those memories!

If I could, I would give this hostel 10 stars. It's in a great location, walking distance from trams and buses. There are enough toilets and showers, the quilt in the room is very warm, and the bed and pillows are easy to sleep on. Although the breakfast is simple, it has coffee, eggs, and toast. The most noteworthy thing is that the staff here are friendly and there are small activities every night. Whether you want to communicate with others or concentrate on work, this is a great choice. Recommend~

This was my first hostel experience and it a great one, plus you can’t beat the price! To start, the staff is super friendly and want to help out anyway possible. There are events every day of the week that range from rooftop bbq with karaoke to movie night. It helped break the ice for everyone to meet and ask each other questions. The location is great, it’s located a block from all the food spots and bars in Chinatown. It’s about half a mile walking distance from the pier. The rooms are small and have multiple bunk beds, and storage underneath to store and lock your personal belongings. The room size didn't matter to me as i was only in my room to sleep. My mattress was comfortable and you get a new sheet set when you first arrive. There is a giant private bathroom with shower included that i enjoyed. There are also smaller shower and toilet rooms if you need to wash and dont want to wait or care for the big private room. The staff also provide daily room cleaning and a fresh towel everyday. The kitchen is good for cooking as many different community members cooked big meals. Again, the staff go above and beyond to keep it tidy. Lastly I’ll mention the people i got to meet, all international travelers from China, Japan, Brazil, Canada, France, all the way to Spain. This was an amazing experience and has given me a positive outlook on hostel living and traveling in general. I will definitely be returning!

A fine little hostel that provides exactly what they promise. Nothing too fancy, basic breakfast is provided which is nice, just be ready to climb some stairs - the rooms seem to be on 3rd and 4th floors mostly. The staff is friendly and the environment is very social.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Pacific Tradewinds Hostel recently and highly recommended it. The hosts Nikole and Asad were so helpful and pro-active. It is perfectly situated and all major sights within 🚶♂️ distance, the TransAmerica pyramid is just around the corner! I came here not expecting too much but was totally surprised how wonderful and experience I would have. They have free breakfast daily, taco Tuesdays where we got free tacos, and also Fridays were rooftop bbq nights. Very friendly staff, extremely helpful in all ways. I shall definitely come here next time. Awesome place. Very close to everything. Right in downtown SF.

Excellent location given the very reasonable price (for San Francisco). Staff were incredibly helpful, especially as I had found myself in a tough situation with flight delays. I simply needed a place to take a nap after having spent the night at the airport. The staff were okay with me checking in early (9am). That gave me time to rest, freshen up, and even stretch my legs, before I went on my way.

Hello everyone! I stayed at another hostel (green tortoise) where the staff treated me very unfairly. They assumed I was dependent, despite having two higher education degrees and working as an engineer and teacher. They embarrassed me in front of other guests, confronted me on the street, and declared I would never stay with them again. I was very disappointed and upset, especially since San Francisco is a foreign city for me. After that, I came to Trade Winds, and the receptionist was very polite and immediately reassured me mentally and checked me in. I rested a bit. And when I went upstairs, I discovered that they had organized a cozy party for the guests with BBQ so they could meet and feel comfortable. It turns out they all came on the recommendation of their friends who had stayed at this little hotel before, based on a good recommendation. So I spent a few days here. And there was a very friendly atmosphere, which, it seems, the staff creates. I think I'll come back here again because this place attracts positive people.
As for the rooms, I only stayed in one. There, belongings are locked in a metal box, but I hardly felt the need to lock it. The beds are made of metal and don't squeak, the mattresses are comfortable. Overall, I was very happy to be time there.

Cute little hostel in the middle of China town. The space is the room was quite cramped for six people, but I slept comfortably and valuables were stored safely in units underneath the beds.
The free breakfast was great, I really appreciated the fresh fruit and peanut butter sandwiches. Staff was super helpful!

This has been my best stay in SF. Good amenities, clean and the best part is thriving great community. they hold a lot of events throughout the week. Wonderful stay at the hostel. This was a very nice hostel with very nice, helpful people. Great location. It was quiet and well-run with lots of amenities I didn't expect. The people who wrote negative reviews must never have stayed in a hostel before. If you want all the things they want, stay in a hotel that costs triple. So I would highly recommend this place.

A pleasant afterthought of a failed camping trip! This hostel is so cozy and fun! A tooooon of personality, clean, stress free and safe. As a young woman, I didn’t feel worried or unsafe at any moment. Yogi the hostel dog will greet you at your car! 10/10 recommend.

It was my first time in a hostel type and I had my doubts, but the experience was excellent, the organization team is super prepared and provides you with everything you need to make your experience comfortable, the location is not to mention close to everything on foot, very Surely the place, if you are thinking of booking this one you will not regret it.

The staff are amazing. I felt very welcomed, and I love how they create opportunities to meet up with the other residents. One word of caution is that the stairs are VERY steep (and there are a lot of them), but if your knees and heart are up for it, it's excellent practice for being in the heart of San Francisco!

I traveled from Florida to San Francisco for 2 days! I really appreciate the service provided by the hostel!

No privacy curtain, mattresses/pillows were thin, and bathrooms are not ensuite. There was no elevator and with my room on the fourth floor if was tiring to walk up and down every day. Only good thing is the location which was walking distance to Ferry Building and Chinatown.

Great camping 🏕️ stay! Clean, humorous sign and friendly staff. Quite a few of stairs because that’s how the building is designed, skinny tall building with no elevator. If you’re in OK shape you will be fiend to climb up and down the stairs! Highly recommend for downtown SF central stay

I enjoyed my week at this hostel. The staff was very welcoming. Easy to find and get situated. When I visit SF again I WILL be staying here!!! The dorms and bathrooms were clean. They let us leave our bags there before check in and after check out until we left. Very cute hostel and helpful staff.

Oh man, this is by far my best ever hostel experience!
The best location, the best staff, the best comfort, the best roommates, they have it all.
Apart from the usual things like cleanliness, amenities and all where the hostel checks all marks, there were a few things I was concerned about before booking -
=> I've 3 bags will it be comfortable or not.
While I was staying only 2 - 5 beds out of 8 in my room were occupied, so there was plenty of room for me. Even when full it has huge lockers that can have your backpacks inside and you can keep your trolley bag besides your bed.
=> There are too many stairs.
The quiet dorm is on the third floor (second floor for me as I am used to having the ground floor as floor zero back home) which wasn't too many stairs at all. There are also chairs placed on every floor in case you need a breather before heading up.
=> Being an introvert will I be able to talk to people and spend good time in the city since I know no one there.
A great aspect of this hostel is that most of the staff are volunteers and they are world travelers themselves. Which brings about a totally different perspective and it makes it so easier to have conversations with them.
=> What do I do in the city
The hostel folks have so many interesting activities planned for each day of the week, that you'll definitely find something to do. They have an answer to almost all your touristy queries.

The hostel manager (who's a gem of a person himself) and the staff arranged an amazing Thanksgiving dinner for us all. Made me feel like I was sitting among friends that I've known for so long and made my stay memorable.

Wonderful hostel! Extremely friendly and welcoming.
Angelo was phenomenal as soon as we arrived, very kind and welcoming! There is free breakfast every morning and we were luck to be there on Tuesday for FREE Taco night. Great location, comfy beds and great value!

Lots of stairs when coming up and leaving hostel. The commons area has no windows which makes it a bit dark and dungeony as well as stuffy. Besides that I would describe the hostel as a 'family like vibe'. Open kitchen concept, and you can still speak/hang with other travellers while cooking. Very inclusive. The staff were very helpful and had recommendations for anything you were looking for. Bathrooms are cleaned regularly which is fantastic.

The location is great as it’s near to financial district and 10 minutes walk from BART. But for check in, you need to climb up the stairs all the way up to 4th floor which is pretty tiring.
However, the staff there is really nice and friendly. There’s activity for every night and free breakfast every morning. Extra Pros of this place is they even have a WhatsApp group which connect everyone and allow you to find a travel partner easier!
Cons: Room hygiene really need to improve at some point 🙂

Sublime location with parking garages just a five minute walk away. The owners were very nice! Although I had been up since 5 AM yesterday morning working, so I was a little exasperated when he made sure to show me every bathroom location, my room, the storage compartments, and the kitchen. I was ready to be like ya girl can figure it out herself, 'cause she's resourceful ... For a w o m a n (all my homies will understand). 😮💨🤗

I will it 6/10 Rating. Good things about this hostel is Guy Named TJ on the reception. He is super cool and nice guy. aother 02 ladies staff of hostel are also nice. Location is Ok. Wasrooms are super clean.Very small but ok.

I really enjoyed my stay at the ITH Pacific Tradewinds Hostel in San Francisco. Apart from the clean rooms and beds, the experience as a solo traveler was great. Multiple suggested activities are offered by the hostel, such as the weekly rooftop barbeque! Also the staff is super friendly and will help you to the best of their abilities all the time. Kim-ly for instance was able to provide an early check-in for me which was super helpful! All in all a good hostel for solo travelers!

Very nice and full of life ! The staff was great, breakfast is basic but it's free and that is very kind! Rooms are ok, I found the mattress to be perfect but it can be thin and uncomfortable for some. Bathrooms always found clean so that's great as well. Thanks to everyone there !

Have stayed here both times I've come up to SF for more than a day. Nothing but positive things to say. Great location, warm and helpful staff, feels like a home away from home. They always have things to do, easy check-in and check-out - met a lot of great people there, as well. Also, the free PB&Js are useful. 🙂

Pacific Tradewinds met all expectations I had before the trip. Located in the heart of SF, nearby North Beach bars/restaurants area, next to Chinatown and on reasonable distance of main SF attractions.
After 3 years I returned to this hostel and the result didn’t disappoint. Staff of the hostel were all super friendly, room was clean and breakfast included in the price is an extra add-on!
I originally was planning to stay in the city for 2 days but because of cozy conditions in hostel I prolonged it for 2 more nights.

A 5 star is in order....it's my own personal setback that was accomadated.... Make sure that if you may not have a cellular signal through a carrier ( like me) exercise a bit of patience at the entry. There is a sweet spot to connect to the wifi after booking and then able to utilize the keyless entry.
A very memorable experience I will hold dear. I was there on International affairs. Walking distance to many many excellent spots to see. Hit Chinatown on foot and grab some whole foods and experiment in the kitchen.

My boyfriend and I stayed here in October during covid and we had a great experience! The staff had it set up so there was a no-contact check-in (but also were readily available on the phone in case we had any issues). We were very pleased with how clean the hostel was and the staff had sanitizer available to clean up yourself. Definitely sad we couldn't enjoy it as an open hostel and meet friends but we still loved it!

By Bus: The Greyhound Bus stops at the Amtrak Station which is located across the train tracks from the hostel.
