The Hostel has been a legendary staple in Santa Barbara since the 1960’s hosting countless travelers and making memories. The hostel was closed down in 2013 and reopened a decade later in 2023.

This hostel is such great vibes. Super clean. Lots of indoor places and outdoor lawns to hang out. It's obviously a budget place with shared spaces, and you do have very soft bunk beds. Aaaaand Ren is the best!!

Despite that I've stayed here so many times years ago, I didn't even stay for my one night already paid stay. Anybody walking by the bathroom can see inside or even just come inside if they felt like stepping in and over the giant windows that are left wide open. Same goes for the rooms themselves. Giant windows directly facing the train station that are left wide open and are even easier to step right into. The bedding smelled like a mixture cleaner and mildew. The fridge is filthy and stinks of bad food. The room doors are ALWAYS left open l. So why they even provide key cards is beyond me because nobody ever shuts the damn room door upon exiting. I couldn't recommend this place any less. 0 stars!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely loved my stay here! Everything from the friendly staff and cleanliness to the overall atmosphere was amazing. The hostel had such a welcoming, laid-back vibe, and I really appreciated all the thoughtful little amenities, like yoga mats, books, and other extras that made the experience even better! The location is AMAZING!! Two blocks from the beach, grocery options close by, restaurants, etc. I rented a bike from American Riviera Bikes Tours & Rentals (best price in town) for the duration of my stay, and that made getting around 110% easier than walking everywhere. My only hiccup was on the day I had somewhere to be mid-afternoon and needed to get fully ready - hair, makeup, the whole-9. The restrooms were being cleaned, and the single bathroom was occupied, so I couldn't use it. Unfortunately, there wasn't another space available to get ready, which made things a little stressful. I also felt like the staff member was a bit annoyed that I needed access, but I take some responsibility for not asking about the bathroom availability ahead of time. That being said, this was such a small part of an otherwise fantastic experience! I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Santa Barbara. Definitely a five-star stay!🌴☀️

With a location just across from the Amtrak train station and less than a minute walk to the hostel and a waiting bed, mind you, this place is a dream come true for adults who are comfortable with dormitory style accommodations. In addition, there are also a few select private rooms available. Though I've visited this hostel and the area in the past by car, this is my first by train arrival experience, and was simply blown away to discover the complete makeover by its new ownership. This is a hostel stay I highly recommend. I now look forward to planning future stays here often, since Santa Barbara is such a unique and beautiful place to be. My next visit will include renting an electric bicycle and touring the nearby bicycle trails, all with an ocean view. Nice job, ITH! See y'all again; very, very soon. Ps: Five stars? Pffft. An entire CONSTELLATION of stars! How about that?!!! Keep up the good work...

This cute little beachside hostile was perfect for my stay here. A bounty of amenities and very clean rooms. The staff was super responsive and flexible with my late check in time due to flight delay. Great experience and would definitely stay here again.

Would stay again! The location was perfect to explore all of Santa Barbara downtown via bus or walking to the pier. Loved that the Amtrak was a 2 minute walk away. I stayed in the female-only dorm and felt very secure. The hosts are very attentive to who comes in and are helpful with any questions/concerns you have. I only stayed one night. They keep the doors open and although there is a room fan and a personal fan at each bed, it gets warm in the dorms. If you're a person who needs it to be 68 degrees to sleep, this won't be your cup of tea.

This has been the second hostel I’ve stayed at in my life and i will say i will be returning. The staff are super chill and feel like one big family. Things are constantly getting cleaned. Nice and quiet considering how many people are there. The bunks had plenty of storage space which as someone who love to have a set up while getting ready, it was perfect. Weed friendly which is perfect because it’s right by a bunch of amazing restaurants. The only obstacle i had was that they don’t have ac in the rooms just fans, which wasn’t the worst, but if you run hotter bring a extra portable fan for more comfortable

Check-in and check-out process was swift and simple. Staff were friendly and polite. My issue is with the sleeping quarters itself. Despite online descriptions that claim there is AC, AC was not working in my area and not enough fans were provided. Moreover, there was an bad smell in the hostel.

incredible experience. I took the Amtrak to Santa Barbara and the hostel is right across the train tracks. it's also right next to the Funk Zone and State St., so I was able to hit good food spots and the local Saturday farmers market. they also have two events with their staff per day! super great way to meet new people and make fun memories. everything is super walkable too! only needed to call rideshare to get to Goleta/IV. only con: my allergies acted up terribly in the top bunk. wondering if it's from the ceiling or the fan? I still enjoyed my nights there anyway! would stay again. 🫶 thank you.

Staying at this hostel was an amazing decision. The staff were all lovely and very kind. The location itself is positioned right within walking distance to downtown santa barbara and the funk zone. Being less than a ten minute walk from the beach, good choices for food, as well as a couple of coffee shops in the area location couldn't be better.

Best hostel ever! I love the staff here, and all of the guests are so uplifting and fun. You can definitely make this a social event or choose to keep to yourself. The hostel hosts a lot of fun activities, and the yard is a great place to hang out. You can easily walk to the beach and to the shops nearby. Staff is helpful and the place is super clean. They also offer coupons for nearby businesses and a lot of great recommendations for things to do. I'll always come back here when visiting SB!

We had great overnight stay in a “Van Life” spot. It’s a perfect location near the Funk Zone and Amtrak station. It was safe, quiet (once the train stopped running for the night) with a chill vibe. The staff was welcoming, hospitable, and the grounds, common areas, showers/bathroom we’re clean. If you Van Life, would suggest a spot further away from the mini-bus “smoke” room if you’re sensitive to second-hand smoke. Overall a nice stay!

Oh wow. Have you ever stepped into Narnias closet? Well if you thought was just a fantasy novel then you have not spent time here at the ITH Surf Hostel in beautiful Santa Barbara. The vibes are so vivacious and vibrant that you forget you have other plans and other people to see. Outside the matrix, this place is magnificent and magical and you forget about the material world. The rooms are cozy and sure people may snore but it is part of the experience. For the extremely high value the cost is super low. Oh and the staff while I was there was so fun, upbeat, chill, down to earth and so knowledgeable. They have so many events to do here that you forget there is a vibrant downtown and other historical areas to visit like the courthouse and the funk zone. There is cornhole boards, a ping pong table, spike ball, this place literally has everything you need. Rosie was a delight and warm like a cozy blanket with her attitude, Chaz has a smile that makes you not want to leave. Kai and her Yoga sessions by the ocean are serendipitous and sublime. Not to mention you have the chance to check out the infamous author, Zack Reed and his book, "Same Bag Different Bunk." Samir is great along with Dan the Piano Man, Kar and her witty banter, Ella was one of the new volunteers but fit right in with the entire atmosphere. Kali was the coolest nd hippest chick and she will show you all about the "Cannabus". Last but not least was who they call, The Goddess, Maxine and her singing voice is something to be heard. I highly highly recommend this place to everyone young to old, travelers to families.

Other than missing a screen on the window to my private room, everything about my stay was perfect. Our patient and warm host, also, the author of a book you can purchase at the place, explained everything to us about getting in and out, and how to handle the shared kitchen, etc. There are activities every day. There is a great outdoor space, and a very cool school bus, that I found to be a great place to meet new people. I will definitely stay here again. I literally walked across the train tracks to get back to the station for my ride home the next day. And it’s just walking distance to both the beach and State Street.

This is my first time experiencing staying in a hostel and let me tell you this hostel did not disappoint at all! I have never been away from home and still feel like im at home. The location is very close to the beach, boardwalk, restaurants, bakeries, and wine and beer. Very walkable👍🏼 Amenities: Bathroom/Showers are segregated and very clean. They have a separate all gender toilets. Kitchen is available to use you just need to clean after whatever you've used. Common Area is very spacious, perfect if you just wanna lounge and relax. Instruments are free to use but not after 11pm. Board games are also available for use. Front area has lounge chairs for every guest, a ping pong table, and bean bag toss. Staff: NO WORDS! Love every single staff, very accommodating, informative, reliable, friendly, over all perfection! No wonder I feel just like at home because the staff treats you like family❤️ Leaving this place is like leaving home but I will surely be back if I visit Santa Barbara again and refer them to my friends and family.

My first stay in a hostel and it superseded my expectations! Rosie was my first friend that I met and she absolutely radiates sunshine! Maxine is a goddess, talk to her for 2 seconds and you'll understand! And the local author, Zack Reed, wrote a book about hostels (if you're new, ask him about it!). Such a wonderful group, welcoming and friendly. I am definitely impressed. And the atmosphere is top tier. Everything is clean, well-maintained, and easygoing. Also, clean up after yourself to be a part of the team. Sharing is caring! The communal environment really makes the stay spectacular. 10/10 recommend! Happy travels!

Great location, especially if you are traveling by train. Great pricing. I really liked the staff that greeted me. Matt? The staff when I was checking out couldn’t care less. Also, some people were walking in the room, doing things after 11 pm, and of course, others snoring, so I had a very hard sleeping even with earbuds. If you are a sensitive sleeper, it might be better to rent an Airbnb for a night.

This is what a hostel is supposed to be with many community events. Only drawback is refrigerator may not be cold enough, but that is minor. Also dorm bed by door is awkward with people nearly bumping me into me if I was getting into and out of the bunk.

ITH hostel at Santa Barbara turns out to be the surprise highlight of my trip at Santa Barbara. The hostel really has the community hostel vibe. There are activities organised by host and staffs daily, helping travellers to enjoy their time during their stay or to bond and make new friends. The staffs are nice snd helpful. The bedsheets are clean and I saw staffs cleaning the areas daily. Special mention goes to the host Bobby who brought fellow travellers for fishing and hotspring trail hiking, both are really fun! Just book it! Seriously the best hostel you’ll experience. So clean, aesthetic decor and lots of communal space for lounging including a super sick school bus out back. The showers were top notch and the free breakfast had lots of options. The staff were the best ever (especially Zack), always asking how you’re doing and suggesting things to do. I felt like more than just a patron here, I felt at home. ITH knows what they’re doing!

Celebrated a girls trip/ reunion/ and birthday at the hostel where we stayed for about a week. The staff, the atmosphere, the guests, the location, and so much more about the hostel was such an uplifting experience and vibe. We did yoga on the beach with Kai which felt unreal and hung out with so many of the staff members. It felt like that was HOME. Will most definitely be going back to ITH in the near future!!! Huge shout out to Zack and Kalli who made the stay there absolutely phenomenal!

This was the most amazing hostel experience for my California trip and very budget friendly for everything it offers!! The volunteers are great, amazing vibe and location is perfect for sun and breeze in February.. there were lots of common activities too in the lobby for folks who want to join in, and garden area to sit and enjoy coffee, games and books 🙂 The place is a 2 minute walk from the beach and 5 minute drive to the downtown - I highly recommend it to folks who love traveling and common activities:)

The moment you enter a new hostel, even after years of travelling, is always a bit scary, as you might think: “Will I feel uncomfortable? Will it be dirty? Will I be able to sleep?” The moment I met Zac at the front desk, most of these fears were gone within seconds. I felt welcomed, safe, and in a really nice and clean place with a great crew :). Beds are also offering lots of privacy and comfortable sleep - kitchen and bathroom super clean. — go there if you want to be in a super nice location too.

I had the opportunity to stay at the ITH hostel in Santa Barbara for seven nights, which is unusual for them. However, my stay was fantastic. It was my first trip to the USA, and my first day of exploring was made even more enjoyable by the good humour and friendliness of the staff and other guests. The hostel is very clean, with the staff cleaning all the common areas and rooms very regularly, which is particularly pleasant. The beds are very comfortable and the curtains allow you to isolate yourself from the rest of the room. The kitchen is also very functional and allows you to cook your own meals whenever you feel like it. Activities are organised by the staff every day, which makes for a lively stay and allows you to meet the other guests. I had the opportunity to spend New Year's Eve there, which was celebrated in a cheerful atmosphere and as a community. Finally, the morning breakfast will always be a highlight of my stay. The pancakes were delicious with butter, maple syrup and fruit. I would not hesitate to return in the near or distant future. I can only advise you to do the same and try the ITH hostel in Santa Barbara.

To start with, the staff are very kind and accommodating - I had a gig that started at the time their check-in is and due to traffic beforehand and finishing up well after their front desk closed, they offered a solution that they will leave my key where I can grab it when I arrive so that I would be able to get in (also, luckily, there was actually someone at the front desk somehow at 4am as the key was unintentionally left inside so I'm grateful to her). I booked a bed in the all female 10 bed dormitory and had zero issues. Clean sheets, super comfortable mattress, a wide shelf to put things on, a lamp, and a fan - all of these little things made me sink in and have an incredible sleep. When it comes to hostels, there's a level of trust with the people in the room with you regarding your things, respect for each other's space, and a feeling of safety and I felt very comfortable all around. I also love how close the beach is! It was a short and sweet walk especially with beautiful weather. Very happy that I booked with this hostel!

I highly recommend you stay at a local hotel and avoid this place if you can. I booked a private room online through Priceline to then be told in person that there were no private rooms available. Mind you I had to pay extra for this and did not get reimbursed. The check in process was slow as the person attending me was trying to figure out which rooms were available. I stayed at the mixed dormitory when I asked for an all female room and was told the same, that that was not available either. Least favorite moments: The woman’s bathroom lights run on a timer and shut off when I was taking a shower which was annoying. You have to take off the bed sheets and bedding yourself- is this really a 4-star hotel? And you had to make your own breakfast which kinda defeats the purpose of being on vacation. Very disappointed with my stay and will not be returning. All that to say that you do get what you pay for, so might be worth splurging on an actual hotel. The other guests were nice and the location can be hard to find but close to Amtrak and downtown.

Its biggest advantage is its location; it's right across the street from the train station, less than 30 meters away, and public transportation is very convenient (by the way, to get a daily transit card, go to the MTD Transit Center first – definitely do it, it's very cheap). Free breakfast is self-service, with the hostel providing raw eggs, waffle mix, butter, cereal, coffee, and various condiments. There are many restaurants nearby at various price points, and a supermarket, all within a 10-minute walk. The accommodation is quite small, and the bathrooms are shared; it's basically a hostel, so be careful if you mind that. Oh, and for smokers, the hostel provides an outdoor smoking area – in California, that's a plus.

This was my first time staying at a hostel and it did not disappoint at all. I would definitely stay again, including at other ITH locations. The location is excellent — close to most spots in town and right across from the train station, which made getting around super easy. The staff and people here are very kind, welcoming, and helpful. They organize new activities every day, which makes it easy (and fun) to socialize with other travelers. There are also plenty of great local restaurants within walking distance. One big plus for me was the reasonable paid parking, which was a huge relief while on a road trip. The common areas are nice and comfortable for hanging out, and the dorms offer great privacy with curtains on every bunk bed — something I really appreciated. Everything was clean, quiet, and cozy. Overall, a great first hostel experience. Highly recommend.

Had an absolutely amazing time during my trip to Santa Barbara, in huge part thanks to the ITH hostel! This was my first stay at hostel and I don’t know how another experience could top this. The check-in was super smooth, beds were clean and comfortable with curtains, a socket and small reading light. Bathrooms and toilets were always sparkling clean and the kitchen was extremely well stocked. Location is also amazing, extremely close to the beach and downtown where a few of us would go play some pool each night. Made amazing connections and memories with the people I met here within my first couple hours of checking in that I will remember for a long time. I will definitely be back. Shoutout to Zack, Rosey, Maxine and Huseyin for being amazing hosts that were genuinely kind and nice people.

Apparently there is an issue with not receiving confirmation emails. I did not receive one, so I thought my reservation did not go through and I made other accommodations. My card was charged 2 days out from my reservation, which is the only paper trail of said reservation. Called to cancel--and they have a 2-day notice cancelation policy. I could not recommend this hostel more. I was traveling alone as a 20 year old woman and I felt so safe and at home here. The manager Rosie is the sweetest person ever and makes you feel like you’re part of their little family. I met the most amazing people I’ve ever met and so many people from different countries. All the workers are so friendly and down to earth. The also have coffee tea and breakfast. They do fun events like karaoke night and everyone sang songs from their country. It felt like a friend group even though we all just met each other. They have fun games outside and the beach is a 5 minute walk. I stayed for 4 nights and was sad to leave because it was such a great place. I will definitely be coming back. I can’t say enough good about this place. Also a great place to stay whether you’re solo, family, etc. you will feel at home and feel comfortable.

In June 2024, I spent two nights here in the women's dorm for €65 per night. The team was incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make my stay as pleasant as possible. There was also always an evening activity, like burger nights or gatherings around the campfire. I was allowed to leave my gravel bike in the hallway. The lockers are large and can be easily secured with a padlock. Drinks and snacks are available from a vending machine. A washing machine and dryer are available – you can get change at reception if needed. The breakfast is absolutely delicious – pancakes just the way you like them. The hostel's location is fantastic – close to the beach and within easy reach of town.

This was my first hostal experience and it won’t be my last. The staff was really nice and welcoming, they did a great job keeping things clean and oreganized. The place was very well located near the beach and State street and the train station. The coffee and breakfast were good and the bed comfortable. I enjoyed meeting people from around the world. Nestled near the ocean's edge, the ITH Santa Barbara Surf Hostel exudes a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. The staff strike the perfect balance—supportive yet unobtrusive. Rosie, the Assistant Manager, greeted me with warmth, genuine connection, and insightful guidance. Both staff and fellow guests carried themselves with courtesy and respect, creating a welcoming community. The rooms and common spaces were spotless and thoughtfully equipped to enhance the stay. Arriving on a Thursday evening, I was serenaded by soulful guitar riffs and rich vocals during the lively open mic night. My visit was punctuated by a delightful dinner at Loquita, where exquisite Spanish flavors danced on my palate, and an unforgettable Benise 25th Anniversary nuevo flamenco concert at the Lobero Theater, just minutes away. To cap off the experience, I enjoyed a serene hour-long cruise on the bay with Celebration Cruises. I’m already counting the days until I return.

Absolutely the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at. Perfectly located right by the main station, the beach, and downtown. The space is beautiful, full of natural light, great energy, and amazing people. One of the best hostels I’ve stayed at around the world! I stayed for 10 nights with a friend and had an amazing experience. The place was super clean and cozy, with a small but well-equipped kitchen. The free DIY breakfast was such a great touch, the WiFi was fast, and there were fun activities offered every day! The vibe was really social, which made our stay even better. Huge shoutout to the amazing staff Rosey, Maxime, Drew & Chaz were all so friendly and helpful. The location is also perfect, just a short walk to the beach and lots of bars and restaurants.

The place was very clean but the staff is untrained and inconsiderate. Very “not my problem” mentality to unsafe practices. I extended my stay which was a hassle on its own. None of the staff know how to apply the promos that are listed so I paid full price, which is fine but proper training could’ve avoided the issue all together. That night, I was unable to access my room because the manager that had updated my stay did not update my keycard. So I had no access to my things my last night there and no access to my bed. I was able to access the building due to a guest also being up at that time and allowing me in. They did not refund for me this, or offer any sort of voucher or compensation. The manager literally said “ok what do you want to do about it” while avoiding accountability and huffing about my concerns. The worst of it was the male employee that walked into the woman’s room UNANNOUNCED. Multiple times. He also would peek in through the window that was in the bathroom . There doesn’t seem to be AC in there or the rooms , so the windows were often open. When I notified management of this, I was told “well he’s Italian and leaving in a week.” . Very unprofessional, inconsiderate and dangerous. It’s a shame since the place is clean and the idea is great and budget friendly. But guest safety and comfort should be a priority and it’s just not at this hostel. Overall, they did apologize but that doesn’t resolve the issue. I spent money at a place that endangered me during my stay with negligent employees and nonchalant management.

Rosie and Maxine were amazing staff!!! I would highly recommend this place to all my friends. Everyone is great and friendly. Couldn't ask for a better location to stay at your literally next to everything. The beach is a nice walk away. Train station is walkable lol. They had a free BBQ and have a nice patio outdoor area to hang out and meet people plus smoke at. 10/ out of 10 great value,💖💯😁

This hotel is a scam, it appears on the internet as having rooms for 10 people and in addition to that it is a suite, when they give you the room it is a 3x3 and without a bathroom, when I reveal and ask to speak to the manager her attention was terrible saying that I could not cancel because it was the policy, her attention is terrible, the owner of the chain should take measures with her because she does not know how to handle customer complaints. This is a group hotel apparently but they reserve for couples which is our case traveling from Las Vegas after a 7 hour drive and finding ourselves in this situation.

I visited Saturday night to Monday. This place is fantastic. It is clean, safe and the staff actually interact with guests. Every night there's an activity like a bbq karaoke or movie night. Very close to the beach walking. I have told all my friends what a great place. Oh and the free breakfast..they give you the food you cook it how you like pancakes eggs oatmeal ..coffee too. Free wifi. I will be back to stay here again

I’ve been a traveler all my life and have stayed in hostels throughout the western hemisphere. This is the nicest one I’ve been to. Clean, comfortable- with a hearty breakfast and all amenities a traveler might require. The staff is relentlessly, kind, patient and helpful. It’s close to everything from town to beach and they even have organized entertainment ( Open mic, water, balloon fights (!!) and the like. I enjoyed it so much that I put off further travels to stay a few more days.

Great location, right next to the train station and yet very quiet, right between the old town and the beach. And above all, there's a good breakfast and coffee included. The staff create a good atmosphere and are very friendly. A really good place to stay in expensive Santa Barbara.

Excellent service, super clean, great experience! Showed up at 5:30AM after a much longer trip than planned and was still able to check in and get some rest. Definitely top 5 cleanest hostels I’ve stayed at, which was a very nice bonus. Great great great!

Thank you for a fantastic stay! This was the perfect landing spot upon arriving to Santa Barbara. As someone passionate about sustainability, I appreciate that your kitchen is so equipped with reusables, and that there isn’t much single-use material on site. Kudos! It means a lot to me to support businesses that support the surrounding ecosystem. I’d be curious to see if maybe you’d sell aluminum canned water instead of plastic bottled water…just to prevent plastic waste in our oceans! But I am appreciative of your other efforts to treat our earth well. Thanks for a clean, welcoming, bright, and cozy space. I’ll be back!

Only stayed one night, but it was absolutely great! The place is super clean, the vibe is friendly and chill, and we met some really awesome people. The staff was welcoming and everything felt easy and relaxed. Definitely coming back if I’m ever in Santa Barbara again. Highly recommend!

This was my first time staying at a hostel and I had a wonderful experience. The staff is very kind and the bed was cozy and comfortable. It’s walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and other attractions. I would definitely stay here again.

Was hit in the face while sitting in my bunk by one of the men boarding in my room when I told them I didn’t like how he was speaking about women. He was allowed to stay and laugh and joke and drink huge water glasses of red wine with staff openly in the hangout area while I left for my own safety. No manager was called. They offered one night refund after I had been there 4 nights and was just hit in the face. The other dude got to stay. Avoid at all costs if you value the safety of true hostel culture. The same guy -38 or 39- freaked out one of the young 20 year old women the night before and she was all upset late in the evening. Really not a good hostel culture and poor handling of an unsafe situation.

This might be the nicest hostel that I’ve ever stayed in. Clean, comfy beds, super nice showers, great breakfast selection, and good hospitality. Location is absolutely perfect; it’s a short walk to the beach or to all of the shops and restaurants in town. The staff and other guests were all exceptionally friendly and the bathrooms were pristine. We enjoyed our stay and it was the perfect stopover on our way north from LA!

This is my second time staying at ITH Santa Barbara and, I have never been disappointed. The rooms are clean and well-maintained, even the common areas are organized, and they even have board games, Art stuff, entertainment that is free to use. Their restroom is clean. Location is close to everything you would need while in Santa Barbara, I don’t think you can find a great place like this one that is close to everything. The service is amazing, the people are so warm and accommodating and so helpful too. They have activities you can join as well. They make you feel at Home every time. This is literally my new go to place if I want to stay in Santa Barbara even for an overnight stay. Also, if you are lazy to drive, you can take the train and they are literally by the train station.

Best hostel I have been to. Of course, it’s not a hotel, so you have to share rooms. The staff is really nice and formed by volunteers. There are more than other hostels I have been to so they keep the hostel clean and working! The location is of course amazing!!! 🏝️

I loved my stay at the hostel! The staff was so friendly, the facilities were amazing, and the beds were SO comfy! It is also in the absolute dream location of Santa Barbara - you can walk everywhere! I was in town for a wedding, so I didn't even have a big need for the social aspect, but I still met many kind people in the common spaces and loved the events they were putting on to connect people. 20/10 would recommend!

This is fabulous place. It is steps from Amtrak and two blocks from the most beautiful beach and pier. The hostel was clean and the staff welcoming. They even took me in when I arrived at 6am (just let them know ahead of time). The place is safe and has a locker I could leave my stuff in while I waited for my bed to be ready. My only regret is that I could not stay longer!

This is the first hostel where i had to PAY for a towel, and take of the sheets & take them to the laundry room myself. The guy who was at the front desk was definitely high lol, but we didn’t mind because he was kind. The beds dont have any privacy, no curtains :/ Which I really missed. Also the rooms smell superrr bad because there is no AC. However the location is very great and jt has a great atmosphere

Nice, clean hostel with good beds (curtains and plugs) and an insane location but I couldn’t sleep in the female dorm. The guests all seem to be really old? Like several people over 70. In the shared female dorms, there are a few women over 70 and they turned the lights on at 7am and had a full conversation between the beds. Their snoring was some of the worst I’ve heard in a hostel, I was concerned that they couldn’t breathe it was so so loud so stopped us from getting any sleep. I understand it’s not really the hostel’s fault but guests were just really disruptive. Some came to the room very late (like midnight) so they got ready for bed while keeping everyone up. I think the door open and shut 50 times between me going to bed and falling asleep. The door is the squeakiest thing known to man (please use some WD40🙏). It sounds like a gag from a horror movie it’s so squeaky. It seems like a nice hostel but we just could not go to sleep and that’s all we wanted from our accommodation. Several other people were trying to shush other guests in our room. I know snoring can be in any hostel but it was coming from older guests and most hostels I’ve been to don’t allow 70+ in the dorms. They were talking at full volume while others tried to sleep and they had to be shushed It does seem like a nice hostel other than that, book a private if you can.

I’ve bunked at a lot of hostels and I can’t say enough good things about this place! Both the staff and guests are super friendly and respectful! It’s the cleanest hostel I’ve stayed in, it’s reasonably priced, comfy beds, the location can’t be beat, as it’s in walking distance to just about everything, and the free breakfasts are legit!

You can tell from the way the guests interact with one another in the common spaces & by the way the staff & guests interact with one another that this hostel cares about its staff 7 its guests. Clean, friendly, safe, affordable. So many fantastic spaces to be, to read, to eat, to write, to engage with others. I had several really good conversations with guests from China & France & the US. Want to return for another visit soon!

Super comfortable. Couldn't imagine a better location. Save money on the hotel and splash out at Loquita down the street. Literally skip and a jump to the water. Right off State Street. Staff was incredible. You can't go wrong, and I'm someone who is over Hostels but but will definitely stay again

My trip to California had some last minute changes so I stayed here for a few nights. The staff were AMAZING! Between them, the accommodations and other guests, I felt at home despite being very far from it. I would 1000% recommend staying here. As well, I already plan to stay there next time I’m visiting Santa Barbara.

Highly recommended. The hostel is social and great. There's a good social vibe, yet still respectful of keeping a quiet space for everyone to sleep. Staff are all friendly helpful, and big shout out to Davey B and Reuben for a great night of entertainment! There's a variety of social events throughout the week, from film nights, music nights, shared cooking nights, to drinking, alongside daytime events! Location is great so do stay here if in the Santa Barbara area.

Amazing hostel! This went above and beyond all expectations and I would gladly stay here again rather than a hotel or airbnb. Extremely clean and well kept. Amazing indoor and outdoor areas and super easy to walk to State street or the beach. Breakfast was good too!

This hostel is pretty decent place to stay if you are traveling on budget. Fairly clean, great location, breakfast included. They hold nightly activities throughout the week. I happened to stay the night they had BBQ (burgers and hotdogs) for dinner, I enjoyed the burger and asked if I could get a second one. One of the staff nodded and confirmed there was enough for everyone. However, the girl responsible for serving food refused to get me second burger and instead offered a hotdog. When I was picking the hotdog, she asked a group of guests if they wanted more burgers !!! I found it very upsetting and discriminating. It is NOT ok to treat guests differently, we are all humans deserve respect. Any guest needs to feel welcome.

Didn’t think I’d have to be writing this review, but here we are. I feel disgusted with my experience here. For reference, I was staying in a private room with my boyfriend. One afternoon after coming back from the beach, I was changing in what I thought was the comfort of my room. The blinds happened to be cracked open when I saw an older man with a white beard staring at me from outside. In shock, I ducked down to hide and the man then put his face up closer to the window to get a better view. It was only then when he saw my boyfriend get up that he backed away. I don’t want to think what could’ve happened had I been alone. I brought it to the attention of the hostel employees where they confirmed this man WORKS FOR THEM / WITH THEM. They apologized and said someone from upper management would be in contact with me, and I have yet to hear anything. That speaks volumes as to how little they actually care. I also saw the man there the next day, so clearly no action was taken. For the rest of my trip, I was obviously very on edge inside the hostel. So basically I paid $750 to be violated. Awesome.

The windows to the women's bathroom are always WIDE open. And I mean anyone can crawl in or look in. The community fridge is full of old food and smells rotten. They also have a bus on the property for smoking but I'm pretty sure there are other illegal things that go on in there. Not worth it.

Very nice place, modern, good looking and clean. There is a very nice vibe exactly what you expect from an hostel. Staff is very friendly and they organize some activities. Morning yoga class on the beach .. it doesn't get much better :) Even for me - it was my first class ever. Santa Barbara is also a very nice location. Where you can relax for a few days.

I stayed at ITH Santa Barbara last week and it was the best experience ever! I had been traveling California for 2 weeks, staying at hostels, and this one was by far the best one. Not only the accommodation is great, but what makes it so special is the people working there, specially Kai, she was the best host 🫶🏼 I was traveling solo and the fact that they organize differe fun activities everyday makes it so much easier to connect with incredible people. The only bad thing was leaving so early 🙁

Really nice and cozy hostel. The rooms are very clean. I stayed in the all female dorm and even though there was a lot of bunks they are set up well with curtains and sturdy frames that it felt super quiet and private. The bathrooms are cleaned and well maintained. Big lockers for storing stuff are provided in the hallway, which requires a bit of manoeuvring so as to not get in anyone’s way. Free breakfast was great and coffee is available all day. The kitchen is fab - best stocked kitchen I’ve seen at a hostel, and it’s easy to cook here. Staff are great, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome and include you in events. It’s an expensive choice but I had a great time!

I stayed here for just one night and only wish I could've stayed longer! This hostel is clean, quiet, super laid back, and has a perfect location close to the beach and the Amtrak station. The kitchen is a bit cramped when multiple people are trying to cook, but the amenities in the kitchen are great! They offer pancakes and fruit in the morning as well as eggs to make yourself. The hostel has a very nice outdoor area with plenty of seating in the sun or under umbrellas in the shade. The beds are very comfortable. Since the bunks are built into the wall they don't wiggle at all when someone above/below you is getting in/out of bed. The curtains are a huge plus. I got a fantastic night's sleep after a super long day of driving. The hostel can get a bit warm, but they have windows open and large box fans in the rooms. I kept my curtain cracked a few inches to let in air. Overall, I would absolutely stay here again. Kudos to the staff who are friendly and very helpful!!

By Car: Traveling North or South on US HWY 101, we are located 1 block off State Street next to the beach

Hostel Onsite Parking: $5 to $20 per night depending on season.

All guests must be at least 18 years old to stay at the hostel unless you book a private room.

What Are The Check In Requirements?

To check in to the hostel, you must have a valid Passport or State ID which shows your reside outside of Santa Barbara County. A valid credit card in the guest’s name is required for all reservations to cover any incidentals. You must be at least 18 years old.

Is ITH Santa Barbara Surf Hostel Pet Friendly?

We love animals but pets are not allowed at the hostel.

What Is the Maximum Length of Stay at ITH Santa Barbara Surf Hostel?

You are welcome to stay 14 nights per month as long as you obide by all house rules. Long Term Stays are available through our CoLiving Applications.

No. Only females are allowed to sleep in the Female Dorm.

Does The Hostel Offer Parking?

Yes. We have a limited parking spots on site at the hostel. Nightly parking at the hostel ranges from $5 – $20 per night depending on the month. There are free parking spaces in the surrounding neighborhoods around the hostel. Watch out for city street sweeping times to avoid any tickets.

Does The Hostel Offer Day Passes?

Yes. If you need to stay at the hostel all day long do to your travel arrangements, we offer day passes from 8 AM to 8 PM for $25 per day.

Is the hostel good for digital nomads?

Yes. The Hostel is a great basecamp for digital nomads as we offer multiple indoor and outdoor workspaces. You can get work done during the day, make your own meals, and socialize at our daily events.

Yes. We offer a cook-it-yourself pancake breakfast with free coffee or tea.

What is your cancellation policy?

The cancellation policy is that the first night is non-refundable as a deposit to confirm your reservation. If you cancel your reservation prior to 48-hours of 4 PM on the date of your arrival, you can receive a credit for the remaining balance after the first night deposit to a future stay up to 365 days in the future. If you cancel within 48 hours of your arrival, you will be charged the full rate of your complete reservation.

Do you offer private rooms?

Yes. The Hostel offers private rooms great for couple, groups and solo travelers looking for more privacy but still have access to the amenities of the hostel.

Towels are offered complimentary for our Private Rooms.

Yes, The Hostel is centrally located near the beach and 1 block off State Street which has the majority of restaurants, nightlife and cafes.

Yes. Santa Barbara is a great spot to learn how to surf due to the smaller waves. You can walk from the hostel to a surf break within 30 minutes. For experienced surfers, we recommend grabbing our surf boards and head to Rincon.

The closest beaches to the Hostel are West Beach, East Beach, and Leadbetter Beach. Followed up by Mesa Beach to the North and Butterfly Beach to the South.

Santa Barbara is an excellent destination to visit year-round due to the mild climate. The summer time is the high season and offer warmer weather for surfing and beach activities. The winter time is great for hiking the nearby mountains and exercising or relaxing in the mild winter climate.
