Hiking and the Lake are heating up
Excellent Spring weather has created amazing experiences in the mountains. As traveling continues to reopen, people are enjoying adventures on the local hiking trails! The lake is still pretty cold, but if you go at high noon, you will have a great time!
Hikers taking on the Pacific Crest Trail are passing through Big Bear which sits at mile 266 on the PCT. The town of Big Bear loves hosting the hikers and you can expect to see many travelers passing through the city with the backpacks as they rest for a few days off of the trail.
Big Bear Lake is open for boating and recreational activities on the water.
As far as Big Bear weather goes for May, the average high temperature is 68 degrees Fahrenheit while the average low temperate is 36 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature in the Lake is a cool 59 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hike The PCT
Nestled onto the Pacific Crest Trail at mile marker 266, Big Bear Lake is one of the PCT Hiker’s favorite stops for resting up. “Taking a few zeros”, as hikers refer to it as when they lay low and rest from hiking the trail.
Even if you can’t hike the entire PCT this season, many recreational hikers enjoy doing shorter day hikes or overnight hikes around the region.
HIGH ALTITUDE TRAINING
Big Bear sits at just under 7,000 feet elevation and is the perfect destination for high altitude training. Everyone from runners, boxers, cyclists, and swimmers head to Big Bear for training at high altitudes.
If you have an upcoming event or competition and need to improve your performance and stamina, consider heading up the mountain.
Spring Fishing
Be the first on the lake to catch huge mountain trout before the summer rush begins. One of the best places to catch fish on the Lake is from the beach shoreline on the north side of the lake near the dam.
Helicopter Tours
Head to the Big Bear Airport and lift off over the mountains on a scenic helicopter tour. The helicopter has a capacity for you, 2 friends, and of course the pilot.
I have done the tour before and can say it is amazing. You get to see views of Big Bear you didn’t know exist. The tour brings you over alpine lakes, waterfalls, and dives down into scenic valleys.
