Things to see When Driving From Arizona to San Diego
The Imperial Sand Dunes
On your way West, make time to stop at the Imperial Sand Dunes. Roughly 65 miles northwest of Yuma, Arizona, this outdoor recreation area is a favorite for travelers. These sand dunes are the largest in California and are the perfect place to explore with an off-highway vehicle. Walking through the sand dunes gives off the feeling of being wandering through the desert. With its scenic backdrops and unusual landscapes, the sand dunes are an excellent place to stop off and take photographs.
For a great bite to eat nearby, check out Las Chabelas Restaurant. This local joint serves up delicious Mexican food at affordable prices.
Yuma Territorial Prison
For a chilling look at what times were like back in the Wild West, pop over to the Yuma Territorial Prison. This prison was operational for more than 40 years (1875-1909) and earned a reputation as one of the most wretched prisons in all of America. Surrounded by quicksand pits, desert, and rivers, escaping was nearly impossible. Today, you can tour the prison and take photos in its many interactive exhibits.
While you’re in Yuma, hit up Mr. G’s Drive-In. This local favorite serves up fresh, affordable Mexican food, using family recipes. It’s a must-stop spot!
Painted Rock Petroglyph
The petroglyphs found at Painted Rock are considered to be hundreds of years old. A sacred site to many Native Americans in Southern Arizona, the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site is a must-see on your drive from Phoenix to the West Coast. Only 90 miles southwest of Phoenix, the site makes for an easy stop that is not too far out of the way and there are also several trails nearby for hiking.

This sprawling desert landscape is filled with hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and places to sit and enjoy the quietness of nature.
