The Hostel has been a legendary staple in Hermosa Beach hosting countless travelers and making memories. In 1995, the hostel was opened by a group of surfers and now the hosting has been passed to ITH starting in 2023. At ITH, we are proud to keep the vibes right and the energy high for all types of travelers regardless of your itinerary to create a social, friendly and fun atmosphere. I loved my stay at the hostel! I went with my wife and we chose a private room — everything was very clean, comfortable and had a beautiful view to the sea. The manager, Bruno, welcomed us really well — super friendly and helpful. The staff in general were great. We'll definitely be back next time!

I stayed here a bunch of times.. and also worked for ITH when I was 19. But the service I received recently was so beyond devastating… I arrived when the power was out and one of the “managers” supposedly told me she couldn’t help me because the power was out and told me to leave. “Find another hotel” mind you, I arrived expressed no sense of aggression or hostility. I left. I came back tonight for another reservation. After I expressed how I received no customer service to the “manager” that was a lady with blonde hair (she said it was her second hour working) she said she was going to call the cops and that she couldn’t help me. I’ve never felt more discriminated in my life. A customer should never feel threatened over expression certain concerns for the service they received. This is unbelievable on the owner Jimmy’s part and the “workers” he hires. I am beyond disappointed and devastated.

This is not a safe environment to walk into nor are the “workers” trustworthy. I would record a simple interaction as they lie and you would want to keep evidence. Beware!

Clean and simple place to crash near LAX. The manager was constantly disinfecting common areas and was super helpful – even with things beyond the stay. Really appreciated that!

ONLY international travelers can stay here.
I'm a Californian born and raised.
And they said NO I could not stay at their hostel.
Because they don't want anyone local staying there so they can have an international vibe.
Other hostels allow Californians to stay.
I urge anyone who has encountered this lodging discrimination to contact their local officials, state senator, and governor.
Legislation should be passed to ban this discrimination.
I pay taxes in California. I should be able to stay in any lodge in California, including hostels.
The irony is the guy who told me no locals are allowed to stay at the hostel is from Brazil.
His nonchalant discrimination makes it even more insulting.
STAY AWAY from this hostel!
Don't give them your money.
P.s. They have a container of free ear plugs because they are right above a nightclub that plays loud live music until 2 am.

Great hostel with good breakfast and kitchen. Rooms were clean. However, was on the second floor up and right above a bar, which blasted music until early in the morning. Obviously this is beyond the control of the hostel, but something to keep in mind for light sleepers.

Excellent location to be next to the beach. It was clean and people were friendly. There is a musty smell, but that’s everywhere around the ocean. I would stay there again. It was great just hanging out in the area.

Had an absolute blast and met a lot of amazing individuals. If you're traveling alone and are looking for a cheap spot in Hermosa I highly recommend them. They're right next to the beach, and there are plenty of lovely bars withing stumbling distance of your room.

I've never stayed in a hostel before, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but this experience was definitely one I wish I'd avoided.

I chose the hostel because of the location and the price. It's right on the beach on a small promenade.

But that's about it in terms of positive points. The premises are a bit run down and not that clean.

Unfortunately, I had someone in the room with zero respect. The person came into the room at night and made a lot of noise. Of course the hostel can't do anything about that. Still a very bad experience overall.

This place was perfect. I had aprivate room and it was nice and cozy. The area is perfect, felt super safe to walk around and this hostel is the perfect distance to leave your stuff back in your room while you go play at the beach. The workers are incredible helpful. I'd love to come back one day.

Our dorm room was just not well maintained. It was sort of clean but the room and hostel is just very old and the toilet room has a bit of moisture and mold and parts that are loose and old. The beds were fine. The location is close to a beach but above a bar. I think for young people who go to bars late it's fine but for others I doubt.

Reception was SO accommodating when my plans changed, so long as I called ahead of time and was communicative. Very friendly and calming staff. The bathrooms are also some of the best I’ve seen in a hostel (this can always be a toss-up, you never know). Big plus that the dorms have their own. They also supply free ear plugs due to their location on a busy strip (awesome location on the beach). I’d gladly come here again. It’s the epitome of a chill SoCal hostel that you’d come to expect 🙂

I came on a last minute trip and it was affordable! I enjoyed my time at the hostel, I appreciated the fact that I could book a female only room. The surrounding area is beautiful and super walkable. Because it’s situated near restaurants and bars, it definitely isn’t super quiet at night, but if you can sleep through the noise, it’s a great place to stay!

This was a great spot. The staff were awesome! Very very helpful. Kudos to them. The kitchen was small but perfect for the self made breakfast they provide. The bathrooms were spotless. This was my first Hostel stay and I loved it. The location....wow. The bar next door does have live bands on the weekends but the hostel gives you ear plugs if you need them. I was unbothered by it. Daily events were a nice touch.

Hotels usually have friendly staff, but there was a real sense of care and warmth here at Surf City. Despite our unexpected personal circumstances, they did their very best to accomodate my wife and I with the utmost respect and humanity. I enjoyed my stay at the Surf City Hostel. For last minute booking and affordability they worked perfectly. Excellent location right in the center of Hermosas downtown. Lots of great restaurants and things to do by the beach. Friendly and accommodating staff. Will definitely stay again when passing through or one of their other affiliated hostels. 5 star overall reviews but 4 stars for the room just because it is bunk beds but it's understandable for being a hostel and the mattress was comfortable.

Need a place to sleep so I could get up early a d run the coast. This place was perfect. It can be loud in the rooms due to a live music in the Mar below. I'm a US military vet so the sound didn't bother me one bit. Can't say the same for others plan accordingly. Also parking is difficult. There's free parking somewhere nearby. I never found it. I parked at Redondo beach pier a d paid for the night. Its. 1.8 mile walk to Hermosa. Again nothing that bothers me, you I can't speak for. Either way a great affordable place to sleep.

It's the best hostel I've ever stayed in. The kitchen is small; in the morning you can make your own pancakes. There is a lounge with tea that is open all day & during the night. The location is unparalleled for its right on the beach.

I'm so happy I decided to stay here. My friend had stayed there in the past so I felt safe with this choice. And it's situated in one of my favorite places in LA so I was happy to go.

The whole experience was amazing.

Breakfast is included (continental and pancake mix) and the volunteers organize activities every night which makes the hostel very social and a fun place to be (go to BBQ night on Saturdays for burgers and hot dogs!)

The volunteers are so friendly and you'll make great friends whether it's with them or other guests.

The bathrooms are super clean as well as the restrooms, and you'll be provided with linens and towels. And the beds are comfortable!

A massive thank you to Sophie and Carey for making my stay an amazing one. They are always ready to help you and are fun people to talk and hang with. Truly the best! Cannot wait to come back!

If you need to stay close to the beach and the heart of Hermosa Beach, you are at the right place. The only thing you have to take into consideration is the noise of the bars and restaurants close by. So have your ear plugs, your headphones ready or wait it out. Rooms are good maintained and the stuff is super friendly. Just don't expect anything super fancy, it's as good as a hostel you remember from your youth's can be. Also parking is not that easy and public transit doesn't come as often as your like.

The best hostel experience I have had. Clean, considerate workers and NO drinking/ drugs. 2 minutes walk to beach and the bar scene is the best. *Note: bring 100$ deposit or a credit card for them to hold prior to check-in*

Rooms and bathrooms were clean and well maintained but the beds and some of the shower stalls could use a bit more privacy like curtains. Staff was friendly and helpful. Location is great as the hostel is located close to the beach and many bars. One downside of this is that it can be very noisy until late in the evening. The hostel did provide free earplugs to compensate for this.

We stayed in the private room and had very mixed feelings about the place.

Location: we loved the location during the day. It was super convenient, and we loved walking all around OB. Unfortunately at night it was so loud it was impossible to sleep. There is no A/C, so you have to leave the windows open. The entire room was shaking from the noise until at least 2am.

Cleanliness: the sheets seemed to be freshly laundered but as we were leaving, we found trash from a previous visitor under the bed. The bathroom was decently clean but definitely not the most clean hostel I've ever stayed at.

Comfort: this is where we had the biggest problem. The bed was rock hard. I'm not sure if they had other rooms available because they charge $20 to change rooms after check in.

Just another thing to be aware of. They have a policy where you can't have anything but water in your room. Not a huge deal, but we do enjoy takeout occasionally after a long day of traveling, so it was a bit annoying.

Overall we wouldn't stay there again, but you won't find anything as cheap in the area.

By Car: Traveling North or South on US HWY 1, we are located 1 block from the beach off Pier Ave. There is daytime parking available behind the hostel. Street parking is the only option for overnight parking.

By Bus: The Greyhound Bus at Union Station Los Angeles is the closest Bus Station.

By Plane: Los Angeles International Airport LAX is located 15 minutes away by car. We recommend using UBER for around $30 as the easiest way to go to or from the airport.

We create a special stay for you

Age Requirements To Stay?

All guests must be at least 18 years old to stay at the hostel.

What Are The Check In Requirements?

To check in to the hostel, you must have a valid Passport or State ID which shows your reside outside of Santa Barbara County. A valid credit card in the guests name is required for all reservations to cover any incidentals. You must be at least 18 years old.

How Close Is The Hostel To LAX

The Hostel is 15-20 minutes via Uber to LAX. You can easily go from the airport to the hostel with minimal traffic.

Can I Bring My Dog?

We love animals but pets are not allowed at the hostel.

How Many Nights Can I Stay?

You are welcome to stay 14 nights per month as long as you obide by all house rules. Long Term Stays are available through our CoLiving Applications.

Can Males Sleep In The Female Dorm?

No. Only females are allowed to sleep in the Female Dorm.

Yes. We have a limited parking spots on site at the hostel. Nightly parking at the hostel ranges from $5 – $20 per night depending on the month. There are free parking spaces in the surrounding neighborhoods around the hostel. Watch out for city street sweeping times to avoid any tickets.
