Big Bear Lake, located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, offers a range of exciting activities to enjoy during the summertime. Just about everything from underwater to the sky. Whichever experiences you are looking for, summer in Big Bear *always* serves up a great adventure.
Water Sports at Big Bear in summer
Big Bear Lake is perfect for various water sports. It’s still warm, and you can cool off with a refreshing float at one of the sandy beaches near the dam.
Go kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing, or rent a pontoon boat to explore the lake’s crystal-clear waters. Or just dive in baby! For rental spots in town, we recommend Paddles and Pedals. Their rates are competitive and they offer various water vessels to be rented.
Camping and Picnicking
Big Bear Lake has several campgrounds and picnic areas where you can immerse yourself in nature. Pitch camp, enjoy a picnic by the lake, simply relax and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
Look around, crack open a beer and a book, and chill. Cheers! Do this in combination with any of the following and you’re in for a sublime time. One of our favorite spots in town is Pine Knot. They offer a range of camp sites, and their prices are fair. We recommend bringing a crew from the hostel and spending a few nights sleeping under the stars! Otherwise, check out Hanna Flat. This spot requires a high-clearance vehicle, but it is totally worth the effort!
Hiking at Big Bear in Summer
Find the best alpine trails as you climb to the summit and overlook the San Bernardino National Forest at Big Bear in summer. Explore scenic trails like Castle Rock Trail, Pine Knot Trail, or the Cougar Crest Trail, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lake. We also like hiking Jenks Lake Trail, a moderate 3-mile loop with great views.
The full guide to planning your best hike possible, at every level, can be found here.
Cycling & Mountain Biking
Big Bear Lake offers numerous trails that cater to hikers and mountain bikers of all skill levels.
Didn’t bring your own bike? No prob. Accessible rentals are available at posts within the lake grounds. Step by step guides provided here.
Scenic Chairlift Rides
Take a scenic chairlift ride at the Snow Summit Ski Resort to enjoy 360 degree, panoramic views of Big Bear Lake and the surrounding mountains. You can also bring your mountain bike and ride the chairlift up for some insane downhill biking (if you’re experienced at it, please don’t hurt yourself!!!)
Ziplining in Big Bear in Summer
I have always wanted to do this. Experience the thrill of ziplining through the mountainous landscape of Big Bear. Fly through the trees, feeling the rush as you enjoy spectacular views of the forest and lake below. Daunting and exhilarating. Action Tours is one company that we suggest if you’re looking to zipline at Big Bear Lake. Companies often give price breaks for groups, so gather some friends at the hostel and get out for a day of ziplining!
Off-Roading in Big Bear in Summer
Big Bear is known for its 4×4 terrain game. If you’re an off-road enthusiast, explore the rugged terrain surrounding Big Bear Lake with off-roading adventures. Rent an ATV or a UTV to traverse the forested trails and enjoy an adrenaline-filled experience.
Full guide to rentals, trails, and levels here.
